Description

For beginners and experienced songwriters alike. 10-weeks only.

“Songs are like pockets. They can be a collection of thoughts, images, feelings, riffs, vocal signatures, phrases, slogans, stories, a novel in three minutes. They are malleable, widely-varied and portable. A song can act as catharsis, lullaby, trigger-for-an-essential-cry, chant, rant, crazy dance companion, long lost friend. The songwriter can sum everything up in one line, one chorus. Other voices can join yours in solidarity. When we learn to express ourselves through words and music, we are empowered. When we understand how to use our voices, we are empowered. But when we combine the two–amplifying our own authentic writing voice with our God-given physical instrument––nothing can stop us. Anyone can write a song. I will show you how.”
-Nerissa Nields

This is a songwriting workshop for anyone with an interest in the art and craft of songwriting. Each week we’ll discuss an element of the building blocks of songs, then practice what we’ve learned, creating fragments at first, and eventually composing songs.

Nerissa Nields has written hundreds of songs and released twenty CDs in her thirty-year+ career. She has a deep respect for the craft and enjoys the process of showing how a song comes together, and in discussing all the ways a song might be born and make its way out into the world.

Students are encouraged to write or begin one song a week and revise songs as they go, aiming towards a final project to be determined by the composer/poet—it could be one full song or an EP or a video.  Weekly assignments will be given, and we will also generate work in class. As we gain confidence, a portion of classroom time will be spent showcasing new songs.  We may also discover songwriting partners—perhaps one student whose strength is poetry wants to work with another whose strength is composition.

Though reading music is a plus, it is not necessary for this class. Nerissa will address varieties of song structure and give students the confidence to begin to compose, even if they cannot sing and have doubts about their ability to operate a player piano.

We will be analyzing some of the finest folk, rock and pop songs of the twentieth and twenty-first-centuries. Students will bring in songs they admire. Looking carefully at the work we love, we will see what makes a satisfying song, where some of the seeds and themes came from, and we will take assignments from some of these themes.

The Fine Print: cost is $360 for ten weeks. Class will meet on Zoom Tuesday nights from 7-9pm Eastern Standard Time. Class starts Tuesday March 22 and meets for eleven weeks, though we will skip Tuesday April 19. Last class Tuesday May 31. On Zoom.
